LOCAL LOVE: Meet Susan Hill

Welcome to Local Love!
Local Love is a new weekly interview column shining a light on the amazing people that surround us daily as well as an effort to build community in Upper Makefield Township (PA).
How can a part of the earth with so few sidewalks foster a sense of community connection? This is my answer to that question.
The intention behind this project is to foster connection, peace and understanding in our community. All are welcome and I'm elated that you're here.
Susan Hill was selected as the debut interview and I'm sure you'll love getting to know Susan this week. Enjoy!
1) Please introduce yourself.
Currently I work as a massage therapist at David J Witchell Salon & Spa in Newtown. I also travel to homes and offices for onsite services.
My hobbies include pottery, stained glass, painting, drawing, and sailing. I am a member of the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild for tall ship Gazela and tugboat Jupiter.
I have one daughter and 3 granddaughters who are the joy of my life.
2) How long have you lived in Upper Makefield Township and why did you choose to live here?
I moved to Upper Makefield in 1993 because I was looking for an old house to restore and some land to farm. When I was driving by and saw the for sale sign which read 5 acres and deer tracks in the yard, I was sold! I enjoy the country village setting and being close to the river.
3) Tell me about your favorite local business.

5) What do you consider a local hidden gem?
I think of Earth Center Pottery at Tyler Park Center for the Arts to be a local gem although not hidden. I think a lot of people pass by and never take the time to stop in. I’ve taken many pottery classes there and will continue to return for years to come. Always great energy there!
6) If you had three hours of uninterrupted free time, how would you spend them?
7) What are you grateful for?
I am grateful for my family and friendships, for my health, and the desire to constantly learn new things.
8) Who are three people, living or dead, who have made a lasting impact on you and why?
I would say my inspiration in life came from my Grandmom Hill, her sister Mary and Mary’s husband, Art. They were backwoods country people who had a deep love for the earth, loved to plant vegetables and flowers. They were always honest and kind. Grandmom always had some craft in hand, quilting, crocheting and she taught me how to do crafts and also taught me about wild edible & medicinal plants. Of course my parents helped shape me and even though my mother would shake her head and wonder why I wanted to do the things I did, she accepted that I was just going to do what I wanted. My father was always encouraging me with my artistic hobbies.
9) What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?
10) What advice would you have for your younger self?
Travel more.
Check back next Friday for another Local Love Interview. If you'd like to be featured or want to recommend someone to be interviewed, please contact me directly here. All are welcome!
