LOCAL LOVE: Meet Bridget Speranza
Welcome to Local Love!
Local Love is a new bi-weekly interview column shining a light on the amazing people that surround us daily as well as an effort to build community in Upper Makefield Township (PA).
How can a part of the earth with so few sidewalks foster a sense of community connection? This is my answer to that question.
The intention behind this project is to foster connection, peace and understanding in our community. All are welcome and I'm elated that you're here.
Bridget Speranza is our guest this week and I'm sure you'll love getting to know her. Enjoy!
1) Please introduce yourself.
Hi everyone! I am Bridget Speranza. I am a wife and mother to two sweet girls. Before children, I was a special education teacher at Timberlane Middle School in Hopewell Valley Regional School District. I also have my master’s degree in School Counseling.
Since having children, I have been a stay-at-home-mom. I am 100% sure that my career as a stay-at-home-mom has been way more difficult and challenging!
I am currently ready to begin the next chapter of my life during the day while my girls are at school. I am not sure what that journey will be, but I know it will involve working with and helping people. I have learned over the last 10 to 20 years that people are my passion. I believe I have a lot to offer others. I enjoy listening and encouraging people. I find joy in helping others. So, wherever my next journey leads, I know it will be following my heart and helping others.
2) How long have you lived in Upper Makefield Township and why did you choose to live here?
We have lived in Upper Makefield for two and a half years. My husband grew up here and he always wanted to move back. He loves the beauty and the history of the area, and I have grown to love it as well.
3) Tell me about your favorite local business.
Dominick’s is by far the place to go! I love the white pizza and would eat it every Friday if I could!
4) What is your favorite local place to enjoy nature?
There are two places I go to enjoy nature. I love going on the canal path, which I can walk to from my house. On the canal, I love seeing all the turtles that line up on the logs and I love walking with my daughters and collecting nature treasures.
I also enjoy going down to the river which is across from my house. The stretch of river where we live, when the levels are low, there is a rock beach. We enjoy searching for frogs and swimming in the river on warm summer days.
5) What do you consider a local hidden gem?
I would have to say that Bowman’s Wildflower Preserve is the hidden gem. There are so many paths and so much beauty to absorb while hiking through one of nature’s perfect gifts.
6) If you had three hours of uninterrupted free time, how would you spend them?
Wow… this is a tough one! I would probably want to break it into 3 parts! Part one would be a massage on my neck and shoulders, that is where I hold my stress. Part two would be to take a long walk by myself and then a nice hot shower. Just me time! Part three would be to see a good friend for some good deep conversation. These friends know who they are! The friends that when we say goodbye, we feel like we can tackle another day, week, or month because that conversation was refreshing!
7) What are you grateful for?
There is no short answer for this. I am grateful for so many things and SO many people. If I had to pick one thing, I would say, I am grateful for the wake up call my body gave me by having two minor strokes. Through this experience, I have become grateful for my body, my husband, my children, my family, and my friends. I have learned to be grateful for the challenges and struggles as well as the simple and easy. I am ultimately grateful to be alive and to be enjoying my life.
8) Who are three people, living or dead, who have made a lasting impact on you and why?
I am going to pick three friends to share for this question. My family has impacted me in so many ways that it would be too difficult to pick and choose which family members to talk about here. But these three friends are so important I would like to openly share them.
Charlotte - Charlotte is my best friend. We met about 6 years ago when our older children went to preschool together. Charlotte is my person. She totally gets me and who I am. I sometimes think she knows me better than I know myself. With her, I know that I can cry, complain or whine about the silliest things and she won’t judge me at all and even more importantly, she will get it. She is able to think clearly about what is happening and talk to me in a way that is truthful and honest. AND she does this while having her own stress and struggles. She is such an amazing and beautiful soul.
Kate - Kate is a high school friend who I reconnected with years later as an adult. Kate is someone I truly admire. She is a super strong and intelligent woman with the largest heart. She signed up a few years ago to be a foster mom and since has adopted one son and hopes to adopt her second foster son soon. She has truly opened her home and her heart and created her own beautiful family. She amazes me every day with her strength.
Annemarie - Annemarie is my soul sister. We met while teaching together 20 years ago. Since then, she has moved to St. Augustine, Florida and created a whole new life for herself. Annemarie has taught me over the years to trust in myself and love myself. She has always stood strong in her beliefs and has encouraged me to do the same. She is the friend that no matter how far apart we are, or how often we talk, we are always close at heart.
9) What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?
My girls! Well, I wouldn’t say they inspire me, but they force me to get out of bed in the morning! These two beautiful girls are my life. They bring me so much joy every day and starting my day with a couch snuggle sets the perfect tone for a good day.
10) What advice would you have for your younger self?
I would tell my younger self that nothing in life is truly as it seems. I would encourage her to be flexible and understand that people are complicated and there are many layers to why people feel and act certain ways.
11) Where can people contact you?
People can contact me on Instagram @bridgesperanza and on Facebook as Bridget Speranza.
Check back on a future Friday for another Local Love Interview. If you'd like to be featured or want to recommend someone to be interviewed, please contact me directly here. All are welcome!
